HISTORY CALA GOGO

The company "Baños Costa d´Aro S.A." was established in April 1961 with the aim to create a bar and a restaurant, swimming-pools and a fun and entertainment area in Cala Ses Torretes of Calonge, a marvellous and idyllic spot by the sea. In May 1961 the construction works for a campsite began and in 1962 "Camping Mediterráneo" opened its gates to become one of the pioneers camping resort in Spain.

Soon it gained its well- deserved fame as one of the best campsites in Europe, endorsed by the simple tourist and campsite guides of those times. Far from the internet era, the outburst of telecommunications and cheap flights, its celebrity was spread through the marvellous experiences of numerous campers who enjoyed their stays in the heart of Costa Brava.

Year 1962 marked the opening of the exclusive discotheque "BITACORA´S CLUB - EL EMBRUJO", which rapidly achieved great fame. The discotheque was located almost on the verge of the beach and offered excellent views of the Mediterranean Sea. Visited by famous Spanish artists and also by international artists such as Kirk Douglas. IIt was, with no doubt, the most famous discotheque of the Costa Brava, even today recalled by those who enjoyed it there. In the era of ideological stagnation, in the "Boíte," one breathed the air of modernity enriched by the "Gogos" who, during those times, danced to the music of the 60 s. This was the reason behind changing in 1964 the name of the campsite to Camping Cala Gogo.

Cala Gogo became the symbol of pleasant stays with all those services that were expected from a good campsite at the time: clean bathrooms, economical showers with hot water (worked with coins), swimming pool, hair-dresser, restaurants, mini-golf facilities, flat pitches to put up a tent, or to place some of the few caravans that drove through Europe at the time. There were even concrete-made bungalows available for those families, that had no tent or caravan and a horse-riding club on campsite premises.

Almost 50 years have passed since "Camping Mediterráneo" opened its gates by the sea with merely 40.000m2. Today, it is a first-class campsite with 200.000m2, located in the same idyllic spot and offering services in compliance with the level of requirements of a camper of the beginnings of 21st century. Cala Gogo Bungalow Park continues to be an excellent campsite where the children and grandchildren of those campers of the 60 s enjoy their holidays or getaways with their families.
